Although they may be particularly well known in the UK for their American Indian and Western heritage, Kansas and Oklahoma are also home to some of the most vibrant and interesting cities in the American Heartland.
Nicknamed the ‘Air Capital of the World’ because of its booming aerodynamic industry, Wichita, Kansas’s largest city, has a rich American Indian heritage, a colourful Old Cowtown, an interesting art museum and several districts — Delano, Old Town and Douglas Design — full of restaurants, shops and nightlife.
Oklahoma City, the largest city in the Heartland, is home to the only US State Capitol with an oil well in its grounds, a canal traversed by cruise boats, a popular entertainment district known as Bricktown, and — for lovers of American Indian and Western heritage — the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, the Oklahoma History Center, and Historic Stockyard City, which retains its old-time cowboy ambiance as the world’s largest cattle-trading hub. And then there are the chic restaurants, bars, beer gardens, art galleries and other attractions of Automobile Alley and the Plaza and Paseo Arts districts.
Tulsa, a former oil-boom town and the state’s second-largest city, has outstanding Art Deco buildings, two acclaimed art museums — the Philbrook and the Gilcrease — Route 66 sites in its Blue Dome District, and a lively music scene enhanced by the unique Woody Guthrie Center, which is dedicated to the legendary, Oklahoma-born musician.
